A day with wildlife and my camera, hours after the passing 'Andrea'. 8 June, 2013
|
As much as 5 inches of rain fell in the area overnight, from the first tropical storm of 2013 as it came up the east coast. Roads were closed and some got caught the wrong side of the rising water, some both sides as above near Route 1 in Guilford, CT. As the rain moved away a spectacular day replaced it - Colin

A big surprise this afternoon, July 8, 2013, from behind a bush in our back yard came what I must say was a very brazing, confident, if not cocky Albino Squirrel. Ellen and Bill from Dragonfly farm, opposite our place, reported seeing him last week. Ive never seen one before. The wonderful 'Widow Skimmer" dragonfly finished and made the day - spectacular colors. Posted July 9, 2013

For several days either side of February 2nd, 2014, this Bald Eagle was spotted flying over our back yard, where I took these photographs. Amazingly the silver and gold tags seen on the middle photo was traced to its parents nest. I sent these photos to the Autabun Society andf the USGS to see what they could tell me. They were amazingly able to tell me that the bird was tagged on the 21 May, 2010 In Holyoke, Hampden County, Massettusets. The next was just north of the Rte 202 Bridge. Several days after my photographs were taken, the same bird was seen with a partner back on the Connecticut River at Essex, Connecticut.

The Eastern Towhee has been a regular in the back yard during the winter, scratching the snow away looking for food. We waited until March 19th, 2014 to see the Bluebird.

A Possum and Deer compete for scarce food in our back yard on my birthday
(March 7th, 2015) during a very severe winter -record breaking snow and cold.
Amongst our favourite birds here on Swallowtail Farm are the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds and Barn Swallows. When the young leave the nest it becomes a huge thrill to see them go through training for the long Fall flight south. We love watching these highly social birds.
